Evaluation of Real-time Hand Motion Tracking Using a Range Camera and the Mean-shift Algorithm

چکیده
Several sensors have been tested for improving the interaction between humans and machines including traditional web cameras, special gloves, haptic devices, cameras providing stereo pairs of images and range cameras. Meanwhile, several methods are described in the literature for tracking hand motion: the Kalman filter, the mean-shift algorithm and the condensation algorithm. In this research, the combination of a range camera and the simple version of the mean-shift algorithm has been evaluated for its capability for hand motion tracking. The evaluation was assessed in terms of position accuracy of the tracking trajectory in x, y and z directions in the camera space and the time difference between image acquisition and image display. Three parameters have been analyzed regarding their influence on the tracking process: the speed of the hand movement, the distance between the camera and the hand and finally the integration time of the camera. Prior to the evaluation, the required warm-up time of the camera has been measured. This study has demonstrated the suitability of the range camera used in combination with the mean-shift algorithm for real-time hand motion tracking but for very high speed hand movement in the traverse plane with respect to the camera, the tracking accuracy is low and requires improvement. * Corresponding author.

Applying mean shift and motion detection approaches to hand tracking in sign language
Hand gesture recognition is very important to communicate in sign language. In this paper, an effective object tracking and hand gesture recognition method is proposed. This method is combination of two well-known approaches, the mean shift and the motion detection algorithm. The mean shift algorithm can track objects based on the color, then when hand passes the face occlusion happens. Several...
متن کاملDepth-Based Real-Time Hand Tracking with Occlusion Handling Using Kalman Filter and DAM-Shift
In this paper, we propose real-time hand tracking with a depth camera by using a Kalman Filter and an improved DAM-Shift(Depthbased adaptive mean shift) algorithm for occlusion handling. DAM-Shift is a useful algorithm for hand tracking, but difficult to track when occlusion occurs. To detect the hand region, we use a classifier that combines a boosting and a cascade structure. To verify occlus...

متن کاملImproved tracking by decoupling camera and target motion
Video tracking is widely used for surveillance, security, and defense purposes. In cases where the camera is not fixed due to pans and tilts, or due to being fixed on a moving platform, tracking can become more difficult. Camera motion must be taken into account, and objects that come and go from the field of view should be continuously and uniquely tracked. We propose a tracking system that ca...
